There’s no denying that the Ford F-150 is a great choice when it comes to getting your hands on a used midsize pickup truck. But it's important to note that there are still plenty of options for you to choose from that might leave you confused. Powertrain Options
One of the biggest choices you’ll need to make is deciding which powertrain you need for your drives and jobs around Detroit. Generally speaking, if you’re looking for more towing capacity, then you’ll want a V8 engine, since these typically go all out for power as their main focus. They also tend to weigh more since they’re made out of heavy-duty materials. On the other hand, you’ll also find V6 engines that try for a balance between towing and efficiency. Since these are also lighter than their counterparts, you’ll have the opportunity to pack heavier items in the bed. More modern iterations of the F-150 also have hybrid powertrains that marry a V6 engine and an electric motor to provide even more power and efficiency.
Trim Levels
It’s also important to consider how the trim levels of a used Ford F-150 will affect the features it holds. For example, on the base level of this truck, you’ll have a passenger capacity of up to 3 with the regular cab or up to six with the SuperCab options. On the Lariat® and higher trims, you can expect a maximum capacity of five since it reorganizes the interior space. In most cases, the base trim level will have the least amount of features with it, and will be cheaper. This is ideal for those who are mainly looking for the strength the vehicle provides. If you want more customizable seats or added technological features, then you can opt for a higher trim level.
Types of Used F-150
There are also subsections of used vehicles, so be sure to take the time to learn the differences between them. One of the most common that you’ll find is one-owner vehicles. These are just as the name implies and have only had one driver who previously used them. Typically, these will be from former leased models, so you can be certain of their low mileage and that they’ve been properly maintained. Blue means that it's a maximum of 10 years old with less than 150,000 miles and has passed a detailed 139-point inspection. Gold is for models six years and younger with less than 80,000 miles and a 172-point inspection.
